Alzenau, 7th November 2018. NUKEM Technologies Engineering Services GmbH has been tasked to analyse the potential for optimisation and to develop optimisation options for the flue gas system at Zwilag plasma plant.

The plasma plant operated by Zwilag Zwischenlager Würenlingen AG (Zwilag) in Würenlingen, Switzerland, allows processing of combustible materials and melting of metallic components, concrete and other solids. The plasma process allows organic and inorganic substances to be treated using the same process steps. Although the radioactivity is not reduced by this process, the volume of waste to be finally stored is reduced and a leach-resistant end product is produced by the addition of glass.

The project objective is to develop a concept for a reasonable modification of the flue gas system with integrated water treatment which would optimise the process in a cost-effective manner and ensure maintenance possibilities to cover Zwilag’s current and future needs. The optimisation of the flue gas system will allow Zwilag to process radioactive materials in a state-of-the-art manner from an engineering and economic perspective.

Based on the actual status of the facility, the boundaries of the existing system will be determined and the actual status will be compared with the desired state. The comparison should yield various solutions to upgrade and optimise the existing facility seeking to bring it up to the state-of-the-art standards. In order to choose the best solution, the proposed options will be assessed for compliance with the approved set of criteria regarding engineering and economic aspects.
