NUKEM Technologies and NIKIMT-Atomstroy JSC are about to finalize the supply of the equipment for compacting solid radioactive waste (SRW) at the Akkuyu NPP, which is currently under construction in Turkey.

Together with TITAN 2 ICAS INSAAT A.S. and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, the companies have successfully completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of the high force compactor for radioactive waste.

At the Akkuyu NPP the new waste treatment centre will be used for processing all low and intermediate level solid waste from the new nuclear power plant, such as filters and metal waste.

NUKEM supplies a 2.000t high force compactor including the control system. The high force compactor will be fitted out with an automatic drum feeding system and an integrated pellet transfer device. The high force compactor is designed as a throughfeed facility so that material feeding and discharging of compacted pellets can be performed in one step. It enables a throughput capacity of 6 drums per hour.

The availability of the high force compactor in the SRW management cycle will help reduce the volume of waste requiring further storage. The compacting process enables an up to seven-fold reduction of waste volume depending on the waste morphology.

The high-force compactor for the Akkuyu NPP is a proven and effective solution used at nuclear power facilities in Russia, China, Ukraine, and other countries, confirmed by many years of operating experience.

For reference:

JSC NIKIMT-Atomstroy, a company of the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation, acts as a contractor for the construction of a part of the Akkuyu NPP facilities, including related supplies of engineering services and equipment.

TITAN 2 IC ICTAS INSAAT A.S. acts as a contractor for the construction of a part of the Akkuyu NPP facilities, including associated engineering services and equipment supplies (http://www.akkuyu.com/main-participants ).

Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant to be built in the Republic of Turkey. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units with Russian design generation 3+ PWR reactors. The capacity of each of the power units will be 1,200 MW. Currently the project is fully funded by the Russian party. The construction of the Akkuyu NPP is the first project in the global nuclear industry implemented on a Build-Own-Operate basis. www.akkuyu.com
