Contract
NUKEM was contracted to design and supply a high force compactor for the waste treatment centre to be built at Khmelnitsky NPP in Ukraine. Apart from the high force compactor, NUKEM shall also supply an incineration facility and a sorting and fragmentation facility to NAEK.
Description
The waste treatment centre will allow processing all types of low and intermediate level solid waste generated at Khmelnitsky NPP. Thermal and mechanical techniques will be deployed to decrease the volume of waste to be further conditioned into a state suitable for final disposal. To compact 170l drums, NUKEM will supply a 2.000t compactor, including the control system. The compactor is equipped with an automatic drum feed system and an integrated transport system to bring the pellets to the transfer position. Leakages occurring during compaction will be collected underneath the compactor for further disposal. The through-type compactor allows loading the compactor and removing the pellets in one single step. As a result, the high force compactor can reach a throughput of 6 drums per hour.
