FREMES hits the 40,000 tons mark

Our Belt Conveyor Free Release Measurement System (FREMES) at Dessel, Belgium, has processed over 40,000 tons of material to perform the task of radiological characterisation.

Following the system retrofit after 30,000 tons of soil had been measured, a further 10,000 tons of bulk materials were checked for radiological contamination. The bulk materials handled by FREMES included concrete and gas concrete as well as bricks and materials, such as stones, sorted during the soil measurement. A homogeneous and manageable stream of bulk material was achieved by preliminary crushing. The process had been successfully demonstrated during feasibility studies and approved by the authorities. A total of nearly 95 percent of suspicious material was classified as subject to free release due to being below the threshold. The mobile system consists of two 40‘ containers and can be used again after maintenance. Its design allows easy transport to the next location. The only process medium required on site is electricity which can be requested to perform on-site demonstrations.
