Waste Treatment Centre for Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant

Contract

In 1991, Slovakian nuclear regulator decided to construct a waste treatment centre for sorting, size reduction, packaging and interim storage of solid and liquid radioactive waste. One year later, this contract was awarded to NUKEM.

Description

The waste treatment centre was designed for processing of the following waste streams: combustible solid and liquid waste, mixed solid waste, solid compactible and non-compactible waste, resins and evaporate concentrate. The WTC is designed to handle 50kg/h of solid waste, 10m3/year of liquid waste and 80m3/year of resins. To this end, the WTC is equipped with the following processing facilities:

  • Sorting facility
  • Drum monitoring system
  • Decontamination system
  • Evaporation facility
  • Incineration facility
  • High force compactor (>20MN),
  • Cementation facility
  • Radiation protection system
  • Control and monitoring system

Services

NUKEM was responsible for project management , design and supply of the equipment in accordance with German and Slovakian regulations, documentation, safety analysis reports and licensing support as well as procurement, installation and commissioning of the facilities and systems. Apart from the primary system, the contract also covered ventilation and air-conditioning system, laboratories, radiation monitoring and off-gas treatment.
