Construction of Dry Storage Facility for Spent Fuel at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant

30 November -0001

Contract

May 2004, Kozloduy NPP made a contract with a German consortium (NUKEM – GNS) for the turn-key construction of a new dry storage facility for 2,800 VVER-440 spent fuel assemblies at Kozloduy NPP.

Description

The facility uses a long-term dry storage technique for spent fuel inside CONSTOR® casks made of steel and heavy concrete. It is designed to guarantee a safe interim storage of spent fuel over a period of at least 50 years. With the use of proven technologies, the facility's safety level and equipment meet the current requirements of the EC and Bulgaria. The facility also features a state-of-the-art physical protection (security) system.

NUKEM's responsibilities included design and construction of the storage facility for 34 CONSTOR® casks, supply of all cask transport and mechanical handling systems. GNS supplied CONSTOR® casks as well as auxiliary and handling devices to load fuel assemblies from the adjacent spent fuel pool into the casks.
