On 6 July 2022, NUKEM successfully reached the first project milestone. The timely completion of the milestone was confirmed by the Customer’s (ONDRAF/NIRAS) acceptance of the Basic Design.
NUKEM won a public tender in mid-October 2021 to build a cementation plant for low to intermediate level waste. The project aims to industrialize the lab-scale R&D process developed by CEA (Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, France). It will be carried out at the existing Belgoprocess Site in Dessel, Belgium.
ONDRAF/NIRAS have nitrate-rich, acidic, radioactive liquids in temporary storage; some of this waste originates from decommissioning. The liquid waste shall be homogeneously cemented first and then encapsulated in non-active grout. A total of approximately 800 drums shall be embedded in a cement-based matrix.
The estimated overall project duration is 60 months. NUKEM is responsible for all process steps, from the design of the cementation plant to the handover to the customer.
