Alzenau, 26 May 2015. Indonesia’s national nuclear energy agency BATAN awarded the contract for Phase 1 “Preliminary Engineering Design” for a 10 MW (th) Experimental Power Reactor based on the HTR Module Design with spherical fuel elements to the Consortium called RENUKO. It comprises Indonesia’s PT Rekayasa Engineering, PT Kogas Driyap Konsultat and NUKEM Technologies. The duration of the project is 7.5 months. It will be implemented by an international team of about 45 experts.

Project Phase 1 objective is to provide all necessary front-end documentation and engineering services to allow a professional, efficient and well-prepared transfer to Phase 2 (Detail Design) and finally the realization of the HTR Project. In addition to a Feasibility Study, the Conceptual Design and a Front End Engineering Package, the project includes the preparation of a Draft Safety Analysis Report.
NUKEM Technologies was responsible for the proposal preparation as well as for leading the tender team. NUKEM Technologies is involved in contributing to the project coordination and management, particularly by taking part in the HTR-Fuel related tasks. Previous experience of NUKEM Technologies in this area is based on the performance of design and production of spherical elements for the German HTR-Program as well as design of a HTR-Fuel Production Plant for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor in South Africa.

Atomstroyexport and other relevant Rosatom companies will be responsible for the nuclear island while the scope of the two Indonesian Consortium partners will include tasks such as siting, infrastructure, aspects of local industry’s participation, especially the balance of the plant.
