Ignalina/Alzenau, 13th October 2017. After Lithuania’s Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) was granted industrial operation license for the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF) – B1, in April 2017, as well the successful start of the B2-project, Solid Waste Retrieval Facility (SWRF) in June 2017, the next major decommissioning milestone for Lithuania has been achieved.
Hot Commissioning of the B34, Solid Waste Treatment and Storage Facility (SWTSF) at the INPP started successfully on 13th October 2017 after receiving the Hot Commissioning license for the B34-project.
NUKEM Technologies was responsible for the development, design, procurement, installation and pre-commissioning of the SWTSF as well as of the SWRF and ISFSF and for providing Lithuania’s INPP with three modern, tailor made plants which assist INPP in their next decommissioning phase.
The radioactive operational waste of the INPP Unit 1 and 2 were stored in the past on the NPP area. In the frame of the INPP decommissioning it was planned to retrieve and treat this waste in the new B234 Solid Waste Retrieval, Treatment and Storage Facilities. The new facilities will be used for retrieval, transportation, sorting, packaging, characterization and storage of 120.000 m3 short- and long-lived radioactive solid waste.
They provide INPP with a bespoke plant and state of the art means to safely and efficiently implement its long-term waste management strategy. The Facilities are acknowledged in the industry as a future benchmark. After commissioning of the facilities INPP will have amongst the most advanced and safest radioactive waste management infrastructure in the region.
The decommissioning of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant including new Solid Radioactive Waste Management and Storage Facilities, is financially supported by the Ignalina International Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF) managed by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The IIDSF is funded by the European Community as well as by Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland.
